Alice In Wonderland

For all its visual splendour, inspired casting, hype and expectations this ambitious sequel to Carroll’s enduring fable is ultimately underwhelming.Despite the ingenious inclusion of Carroll’s revered nonsense poem, the narrative is surprisingly episodic and conventional and purists may not take kindly to the over reliance of CGI and the Mad Hatter’s unnecessary heroic character transformation.

Drawcard Depp may be charismatically eccentric but he is well overshadowed by Bonham Carter’s equally fearsome and hilarious turn and by the amazing art direction which is worth viewing in dazzling digital 3D.

And while the earnest Jane Austen-esque feminist theme will appeal to and inspire female tweens, this stylish romp fails to sustain its initial magical moments and winds up less impressive than the sum of its parts.
