Amreeka

Although writer/director Cherien Dabis’ debut feature does deal with the ever present Middle East conflict she has wisely avoided delivering any sort of political polemic. Instead, Amreeka, the Arabic word for America, is a realistic and enchanting character study which concentrates on the importance of family and the challenges of emigrating from home soil.

What does make this heart-warming and often humorous drama fly is Faour’s beguiling central performance which perfectly captures her character’s irrepressible nature and will have audiences cheering her on in her pursuit of happiness and acceptance.
