Invictus
This earnest pic follows South African president and freedom fighter Nelson Mandela's push to have his nation win the 1995 rugby world cupi n order to unify his country is both authentic and inspiring. And while it may help to b e a fan of this brutal sport, director CLINT EASTWOOD does a wonderful job in evoking the era and feel of the once splintered nation and , in the process, ellicits terrific performances from MORGAN FREEMAN (suitably regal as Mandela) and MATT DAMON (light years removed from his previous role in The Informant as crusading Springbok captain Francois Pienaar-accent and all!)

Review by: Robert Livings Location: Carramar Invictus * * * *
For me, this is Clint Eastwood's weakest effort from the nine previous films he's directed. And if that's the case, that makes him one damn consistant film-maker because Invictus is anything but an average underdog sports film.
THE PLOT: After being elected as President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela asks the Captain of their National Rugby Team to win the World Cup. Simple enough, right? His reasons, it will help unite blacks and whites all over the country. There is obviously more to it than just that, but if you go into it just knowing that, your experience won't be spoiled by already knowing how Mandela cleverly pulls the nation together through their love of a sport.
THE VERDICT: Freeman is a treat to watch as Mandela (even if his accent does slip in and out occasionally). Matt Damon is great too, having endured weeks of countless rugby training whilst preparing for the role, and also hitting the South African accent spot on.
The facts in this film may be a little vague at times, they also seem somewhat stretched, but it's been orchestrated as a film to inspire which is exactly what it does. Eastwood is still at the top of his game, and although this is no Gran Torino or Mystic River, it's a solid addition to an already outstanding resume' for the veteran Director. Rating: Tight Arse Tuesday
