My initial reservations and misgivings concerning this slice of life account of life in the Harlem ghetto in the late '80s were thankfully unfounded. Though promising to be drab and manipulative, LEE DANIEL'S gritty drama doesn't pull any punches and proves to be achingly authentic thanks to its brave central performances from GABOURET SIDIBE and MO'NIQUE. And while proceedings are intentionally bleak the use of surreal daydream sequences makes sure that this powerful urban drama does deliver a whiff of much needed optimism.
