 Where The Wild Things Are
Attempting to adapt and flesh out MAURICE SENDACK'S beloved but concise and dated children's picture book for the big screen would appear to be a daunting and fruitless task but inventive director SPIKE JONZE has conjured something magical. Using hand held photography, Earthy locations and life sized costumed creatures this off beat but genuinely moving and thoughtful tale features terrific dialogue and convincing characterisations. And while it may prove a little challenging and obtuse for young kiddies and for undiscerning audiences (who require their plots and reactions force fed) this revelatory pic avoids cliches and manipulative sentimentality and is ,IMHO, one of the standout movies of 2009.
